The Western Joints

Okay, okay, okay!!!  I’m back at the nice PC room at 3:54am typing a blogger post from Changwon!  It’s Friday night here in Korea and I’ve jut come from a night at the two popular Western bars here, International Pub and O’Briens.  As I told Captain E over AIM, I’ve been avoiding the Western-style restaurants and other stuff over these six days, but I wanted to hit these bars because I heard that they were good places to meet fellow English-speaking, lost-in-a-strange-world folk.  And, boy-oh-boy, did I do some meeting tonight.  I met a guy who had been in Korea for just 10 days, another woman who had been around in the next town over for 2 months, plus a coupla bar owners and an assortment of people with varying amounts of time spent in the SK.  I learned that there is a significantly sizable community of foreigners here (which I never would have imagined from walking around day-to-day).  It was alright…not xenophobic, but it was like a respite from the trials of living in a place where communication and understanding are diffiult.  Plus, the beer is cheap as hell.  I can’t believe it’s pushing 5am now.  If I can rouse myself from the twin bed tomorrow I’ll take some photos and post them.

  1. It sounds like things are going well. I was in Japan when I was 20, and though I only lived there for three months, the impact was huge on my life. And in retrospect, the photos that I value the most from Japan and Spain (where I lived for 3 years) are the ones of the regular streets and shops that I visited in my every day life. I can’t wait to see your photos.
