Minor Unfulfillment

This Friday has been a disheartening end to a very tiring week. Akilah canceled, so I went to play my usual basketball game. The cancellation was probably a good thing because we were gonna see Harold and Kumar which, as my sister reminded me, wasn’t exactly Oscar material the first time around. So I drove over to the Stan-Stan during rush hour and arrived to find the courts lined with folding chairs; it was a presentation for the 2008 admits — and, naturally, not a basketball player in sight. I toured around to look for games on all of the old outdoor courts I used to play on, but not a soul. Everyone seemed to be barbecuing or throwing the frisbee or getting an early jump on the partying. And, suddenly, I felt out of place…this 27-year old with no affiliation and no connections to anyone on campus. All of the guys who normally play must have found something else to do, but I had nothing. Well, it turned into a coupla beers and a mushroom burger at the local bar, but even that place was virtually empty. I guess maybe this weekend was the Tahoe weekend for everyone??
