I’m With You All The Way

Jobless in a Victory of Yourself

When you’re a kid, often times the news is meaningless.  The stories just seem like they’re happening so far away and to other people.  Taxes, politicos, wars, business, environmental  news…it’s all just elsewhere for many kids…or even adults!  So, having been informed that my school is dropping from five to four science teachers next year — I’m the fifth — it came to mind that this has been fortold on evening news for several weeks now.

Damn, and just when I had settled in, too.  I had been getting to know my coworkers more personally instead of holing up in my room during every lunch period.  Mr. Snyder had been sharing stories with me about his ugly losses as a basketball coach following our loss to Hopkins.  I had just baked cookies for our collaborative day.  I can’t say I’ve settled in as the basketball coach, but I was certainly looking forward to taking another crack at it next year.  And I had just written about wanting to follow the progress of many students to help them get into college or just to see what happens.  Hmm…maybe I’ll get to follow them into high school if I can get a job there.  It’s not quite the way I meant, but I guess when you’re unemployed, you’ll take what you can get.  Actually, with that in mind, when I’m getting ready to leave my classroom for the final time in June I’m taking hella shit with me.

  1. Sorry for the layoff. And sorry your Gov. says things like “because our budget is out of whack”. Can’t be easy, either way.
