Thanksgiving Msg
Yo, Happy Thanksgiving, readers! It’s actually 12:24am on Thursday night/Friday morning and I’m hella weary, but I felt like throwing down a few words on the Blogger. Thanksgiving was a peculiar affair for the family this year, precisely because the family wasn’t together. The continuing rifts in the immediate and extended families created a situation where it was just my Mom and I around for the holiday. Wasn’t bad, though, we just cooked small portions of a ton of food. Turkey, dressing, candied yams, salad, etc. And it was nice to eat and chat with Mom. It is such a rarity for adults to be able to do that but it can sometimes be a pleasant throwback; plus Mom appreciates it, right??
But no company meant no activities following dinner. I finally got sick of playing Team Fortress 2 and work was out of the question, so I decided to go see No Country For Old Men. Somehow, on the way, I lost interest, so I ended up just driving around. I had forgotten that EVERYTHING closes on Thanksgiving. Even 24-hour Happy Donut had a sign posted that said they closed at 3pm Thursday and would reopen at midnight, nine hours later. But let me change to virtually everything…although many of them were closed, I found an open Walgreens and wasted money on Fruit Smoothies lip balm, deodorant and necessities I did not need prior to becoming a major physical relationship-having badass. I like saying that. It makes me sound really foolish, but it’ll be okay.
Also saw the idiotic sheeple camped outside Best Buy with tents and heavy coats. But I won’t criticize anymore because I kinda need to be out there myself to buy a Wii. Spirit of giving, people!!

Your Thanksgiving sounds opposite mine. There are so many people in my family that by the time I leave, I realize I haven’t had many conversations with anyone. It’s loud with talk, stories and goofing around. That’s good, and that mixed with real conversations is even better.
The morsel told me with a devilish look in her eye that I could ask Santa for a wii. I’m trying to figure out how to come to terms with talking to her about Santa. I thought she knew last year, but that doesn’t seem to be the case right now…

I would guess that if she’s asking you about the Nintendo then she knows that Santa=Mom…or at least that letting Mom knows what she wants strongly “influences” whether or not Santa gets the message. Is it good for kids to believe in Santa Claus or not? I really don’t know. It always seems so cruel to keep the charade going, but I suppose many kids get emotional when they realize it just isn’t possible.
It could be my videogame snobbery (or maybe I don’t want any one else buying a Wii until I get one) but is your kid old enough to truly appreciate that system? Somehow I could envision a little kid getting more enjoyment out of Peggle or Zuma or Super Mario Land. But I know each generation is more savvy than the last…maybe kids are sophisticated enough to wave their arms around for Wii Sports!

A wii is way too expensive for me, for the ex and I, and she is only 8, so it is hardly justifiable to get something so advanced and expensive! I think she thought I would like one. I think the price is something she never thought about.
I’m less worried about her getting emotional when she finds out about Santa, and more concerned with the reality of so many people going without the basics, food and shelter, a chance at going to school. I talked to her about it last year, and tip-toed clumsily around Santa. Something to the effect of many kids not even having homes. Her explanation was that Santa couldn’t find them since they didn’t have homes. I think I left it open.
In writing I sound like an idiot, but in person, when the morsel is there talking to me, it’s not that cut and dry. I think I answer her honestly, and leave the other parts unexplained unless she asks.
Are Peggle and Zuma videogames for kids? I’ve never heard of those… (But I’m also not in the videogame scene.)
