Saturday Night with Mom
It seems like my Mom and I never spend quality time together anymore, which is strange…given our circumstances. You know, the whole living across the hall from one another. This evening we went to see “My Brother Marvin”…independent urban theatre at the Paramount in Oakland. Serious singing and acting with a gospel essence. This evening was a showcase of African-American culture from the content of the play (Motown and Marvin Gaye) to the clothing and reactions of people in the crowd. It’s lovely to see, but I almost feel guilty saying that because it’s something I haven’t been immersed in since I was a kid. Hell, when I want to chill I go to Palo Alto, not downtown Oakland. It’s a rare event when I’m someplace that is 99% Black like tonight was and it’s so novel nowadays that I examine it like a scientist. Anyway, it was cool. I already had Marvin Gaye’s big hits but now I want to download some of his lesser ones. I think I can sing his stuff (range obviously, not quality) and I want to give it a shot.
While on the train I talked to my Mom about finding a business opportunity to supplement my income. We passed a nail shop and I used it as an example. Thing is, there are probably 50 nail shops in my city. Opening a nail shop can’t be that hard. And I feel like if anyone can do it, I can also do it and really put my mind to it and make it the best nail shop anywhere. When telling her this, but point was that it may not be necessary to invent the next big thing; that maybe it is possible to just improve on something that is everywhere. My mom took it kinda literally, though and she thought I wanted to open a nail shop. Although, if the profit margin is attractive…
