Stargazing

How minor a celebrity does one have to be before they are no longer a celebrity? Perhaps if only 100,000 people know of the person? 10,000? 5 or 6? Last night I drove across the bay to Happy Donut because it’s the only 24-hour place I could think of where I could lay out papers to prepare for the next day. I happened to get a shitload of work done, too, but the real treasure was sitting adjacent to that person I alluded to. It was truly a treat for me to see her in the flesh. Who was she, you ask? It was former Stanford women’s basketball player, Turkish national team member (Thanks Eric) and minor celebrity Sebnem Kimyacioglu, that’s who!

It’s hard for other people to get excited, I know, but I followed the team enough. I know she wasn’t a star but she was a big-time 3pt shooter and starter. She was studying, also…it’s curious to see famous semifamous people in an element other than that which theyre famous for. Gotta say that she didn’t seem too keen on rehashing the glory days…she probably gets that “how do you pronounce your name?” question a lot. And since I can’t think of how to finish this, I’ll wrap it up in haiku:

Sebnem Kimyacioglu

Be a whole lotta woman

Minor fame still fame
