Looking Forward (to Miami Vice)
It’s not often that I think about the future. There’s something of a no-planning, no-direction, play-as-it-lies spirit to me. It’s a philosophy that can work, I believe, and in fact in can yield fine rewards because to subscribe to such a philosophy and to be successful means one must be prepared for anything. And that’s the type of person I like to think I am, you know? Well-rounded. I’m like Thyra the Valkyrie…only, as you can tell from my photo, I’m not a fictional digitized characterization of a Norsewoman. Speaking of Norsewomen, I should get back to reading White Oleander. Although it’s proving not to be as fantastic as the woman in the bookstore said it would be.
I mention the future because I’m thinking about education. I’m finding that educating high schoolers requires an extreme level of committment to perform well. Preparation, tolerance, creativity and patience must be there every day of every week…and that’s just dealing with the administration! It’s possible that there’s no occupation that demands so much for so little respect in return, and it’s true that many teachers deserve little respect…I’ve witnessed teachers’ disillusionment and apathy and those people are really doing a disservice to their students. Or, well, I’ll just say that they could be doing much more than they are. But, like I said, to be effective requires full dedication and I’m not even sure I want to dedicate the next year to teaching, much less part of a career. But what else would I do? I’m well-rounded, remember? I’m passable at everything, but am I professional-grade at anything?
Well, enough introspection for one night. The Superman movie was pretty decent. Rose says that Gong Li’s inclusion makes Miami Vice a must-see, so that’s the only one left for me this summer. I’ll have to Netflix some of Gong Li’s stuff to find out why she’s so unmissable.
